A Word from Pastor Neta

A lesson in Presbyterian vocabulary, and why it matters.  In many Christian denominations, that table that stands at the front of the sanctuary is called an altar.  We call it a table.  Why?  An altar is a place of sacrifice.  We believe that what Jesus did on that cross was a singular event that cannot be repeated.  Jesus sits at a table with his friends, celebrating the ancient feast of Passover, and reinterpreting it in the light of his coming sacrifice.  We join that celebration at a Table, and in the remembering, Jesus, the living Jesus, comes to join us in ways that we do not always understand, but nevertheless experience.  In the process, we can be altered (note the difference in spelling!), and fed for the journey of faith.
